She got out with her puppy. Insurance, she wrote, will cover about half of what it takes to rebuild.

Performer Cheerleader Kait said an electrical fire tore through her home this spring while she was inside.

She published a GoFundMe on Oct. 12. By Thursday afternoon it had raised $8,474 from 35 donations toward a $15,000 goal.

"I tried everything to stop the fire but it was too massive," Kait wrote. She got out with her puppy, then stood outside and watched the house burn.

She had spent years renovating it. "I was finally finished," she wrote. Within about an hour, the house and nearly everything she owned were gone. Smoke and water damaged what the flames didn't.

In a video posted Wednesday, Kait said the fire started in the attic. She called 911 as soon as she could. The trucks took about 20 minutes, she said.

"It's surreal watching everything you've spent years building vanish in less than an hour," she said. "I thought it would be easier telling my story now that it's been a bit. It still hurts."

Kait wrote that she thought insurance would cover the rebuild, and that it pays about half. The fundraiser is for housing, clothes, and the bills the policy won't pay.

"Asking for help is incredibly difficult for me," Kait wrote.
